Passing the Baton

The 1977 cross-country and track & fi eld season stands out: The team went to the IC4A crosscountry championship and the NCAA championships. Ken O’Brien, the coach back then and still today, even now calls those athletes “the kids.” Now some of those “kids” are doing legwork again for UMass Amherst. In the last year they have raised funds—$550,000, with an ultimate fundraising goal of $1.5 million—to increase the scholarship endowment for the men’s cross-country and track & field teams. Family Matters

Steven Gluckstern practically grew up on the UMass Amherst campus. When Steven was 13, his father, Robert L. Gluckstern, was appointed head of the physics department, and the family moved to Blue Hills Road, just blocks away. Later, from 1969 to 1975, Robert served as vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost of UMass Amherst. As Steven’s father was rising through the administrative ranks, his mother, Norma B. Gluckstern, was earning one degree after another, ultimately graduating with an EdD in counseling psychology from the School of Education. [more]

 

Q&A with Dean George Langford

Before coming to UMass Amherst last fall, George Langford was the Ernest Everett Just Professor of Natural Sciences at Dartmouth College as well as an adjunct professor of physiology at Dartmouth Medical Center. From 1998 to 2004, he was one of the 24 members of the National Science Board, appointed by President Clinton. [more]
